How to Renew Your Malta Single Permit — 2026 Guide

The golden rule for Malta Single Permit renewals: start preparing 90 days before expiry. That is when most document updates (lease extensions, FS3/payslips, insurance renewals, and profession-specific re-screening) become realistic to complete without panic.

• 90 days — assemble documents, check whether your profession needs re-screening, confirm insurance and lease dates
• 60 days — lock updated housing proof and employer paperwork
• 30 days — file on the Identità portal if you have not already; this is late

Waiting until the final fortnight is how people lose biometrics slots, discover an unregistered lease, or realise their health screening is out of date for a care or food-handling role.

Identità uses different CEA residence application forms depending on your situation:

• CEA Form C1 — Renewal of an existing Single Permit / residence permission
• CEA Form C2 — New Single Permit application (first-time pack)
• CEA Form C3 — Change of employer (separate route — see our change of employer guide)

Do not reuse a new-application checklist for renewal. Renewal still needs fresh evidence of employment and accommodation, but it usually does not re-require the full pre-departure / vacancy advertising stack unless your circumstances changed.

A typical renewal pack includes:

• CEA Form C1, completed and signed
• Valid passport copy (full copy; passport must remain valid)
• Current employment contract / confirmation of continued employment
• FS3 and recent payslips showing compliant employment and tax reporting
• Updated residential lease + Landlord Declaration
• Housing Authority approval / registration evidence
• Lease Attestation Form (new stamp if the lease changed or expired)
• Health insurance still meeting the minimum coverage threshold (€100,000)
• Health screening renewal approval if your profession / risk category requires it
• Passport photographs

Renewals are usually lighter than first files because you typically do not need to re-submit:

• Pre-Departure Course certificate
• Full Jobsplus/EURES vacancy advertising proof (unless changing role/employer)
• First-time MQRIC / regulatory registration packages (unless newly regulated)

What renewals emphasise instead is continuity: proof you are still employed under compliant conditions, still housed in a registered residential lease, still insured, and (where required) still medically cleared.

Fee-wise, annual renewal is commonly around €150 versus about €600 for a first-time Identità fee — another reason not to let the permit lapse.

If your employment ends while you hold a Single Permit, you do not automatically keep an unlimited right to remain and job-hunt. In practice, TCNs plan around a 30 + 30 day window often described as:

• First 30 days — notify Identità / regularise your status after termination and begin the change-of-employer path
• Further ~30 days — additional time commonly discussed for securing a new employer and filing CEA Form C3, depending on your case

Treat “60 days total” as a planning heuristic, not a guarantee. Always confirm your exact status with Identità or a qualified advisor. Overstaying without a filed change-of-employer / renewal path risks irregular stay under immigration rules.

Since May 2026, work-permit health screening applications — including renewals — must be submitted through the online system at expatriateshealthscreening.gov.mt. Email/paper workflows are no longer accepted.

Not every renewing worker needs a full re-screen every year. Healthcare workers, carers, food handlers, beauty therapists, and tattooists are the groups most often required to re-screen about a year after the first screening. After year two, some non-clinical / non-high-risk profiles may qualify for exemptions — but you must check the current HPDP renewal page for your nationality and role.
